DWI and Methamphetamines
Methamphetamine hydrochloride is a psychostimulant drug that was first widely used during World War II. During the first half of the 20th century, scientists discovered how to synthesize the drug and learned that it could improve alertness, attention, and confidence, and also that it suppressed appetite. It was therefore distributed by both Allied and Axis forces, and in some cases, made available to the public. However, as scientists have learned more about the adverse effects of methamphetamines, their use has largely been banned. However, there are still some prescriptions with methamphetamines that are used legally in the U.S.
Methamphetamines and Driving
Both illicit and prescription methamphetamines have the potential to affect one’s driving. Methamphetamines have been linked with the following driving issues:
- Erratic movements
- Speeding
- Driving off the road
- Failure to stop at stop signs
- High risk driving
Because of these dangers, and because of the dangers of general methamphetamine use, police in many areas have become extra-vigilant about making methamphetamine arrests. Those taking prescription methamphetamines or those driving erratically for some other reason may be mistakenly charged with a DWI associated with methamphetamine use. One of the difficult issues with methamphetamines is that there is no regulated testing standard for drivers suspected of being on this drug.
