Out-of-State DWI Offenses
If you hold a Texas driver’s license and are convicted of committing a DWI in another state, you may wonder what the consequences will be for your Texas driver’s license. Texas law allows for the Department of Public Safety, or DPS, to suspend driver’s licenses of individuals who commit an act in another state that would cause a suspension in Texas.
Frustratingly, the consequences of DWI can be much more severe than just license suspension. You may also face penalties such as heavy fines and years in jail. If you have been charged with DWI, contact knowledgeable San Antonio DWI defense attorney Chris S. Barnett today at 210-587-6464 to learn more about how you can fight back against these accusations.
Reinstatement of License
If your Texas driver’s license has been suspended due to an incident that occurred in another state, there are a few requirements you may need to meet before you can drive again. These may include some or all of the following, depending on your case:
- Provide evidence of a clear status in the state where the offense occurred to Texas DPS. This may require documentation directly from that other state’s licensing agency; court documents may not be sufficient.
- Provide evidence of payment to the courts in the state where the citation was given. This may include copies of court documents as well as other information on the payment made.
- If your Texas driver’s license has been revoked due to an out-of-state incident, you may also need to pay a reinstatement fee to the Texas DPS.
If you need help getting your license reinstated, an attorney can help you present your case to the DPS.
