Risk Levels for Alcohol Consumption
While most of us recognize that it can be bad for our health to consume too much alcohol, it is sometimes hard to discern where the line exists between high-risk and moderate-risk drinking, or even moderate-risk and low-risk. Health experts have determined some guidelines for assessing individual risk. Of course, these are only guidelines, and even low-risk drinkers could consume enough alcohol to have a blood alcohol content high enough to make it illegal for them to get behind the wheel of a car.
Determining Your Risk Level
Many people enjoy drinking, both for the drinks themselves and because they make social interactions more enjoyable for some. Studies have even shown that drinking small amounts of alcohol – especially of certain types, such as red wine – can actually be beneficial to one’s health. However, to avoid health issues and the type of impaired decision-making that sometimes leads to drinking and driving, it can be a good idea to know what specialists consider low-risk drinking:
- For men, this means 4 drinks or fewer each day, with a weekly total of 14 or fewer
- For women, this means 3 drinks or fewer each day, with a weekly total of 7 or fewer
However, even if you are a low-risk drinker, it is important to make sure you do not drive while intoxicated. Have a designated driver if you need to go anywhere after consuming alcohol, or make sure you wait at least an hour per drink before driving yourself.
