The Effects of Different Alcoholic Beverages

Many people enjoy having a variety of different alcoholic beverages from which to choose. Generally, these drinks are beer, wine, or some sort of liquor. Problems arise, however, when people assume that all types of alcohol will affect them the same way every time. Factors such as weight, normal drinking behaviors, how much food is in the stomach, and the type of alcohol being ingested can all bear on one’s level of intoxication.

If you have been charged with DWI, it is important that you have passionately committed and experienced legal representation. Contact the San Antonio DWI defense attorneys at the Law Offices of Chris S. Barnett at 210-587-6464 to discuss your case. Regardless of what you were drinking, you are entitled to a vigorous defense.

Understanding the Distinctions between Liquor, Wine, and Beer

There are many commonly held misconceptions about particular drinks, and these do nothing to help drivers to make educated decisions or to avoid a DWI charge. The following clarifications should be made:

  • Liquor has the highest concentration of alcohol. There are varying concentrations of alcohol among different types of liquors, but most liquors are 80 proof, or 40% alcohol. The liquor can be consumed in the form of a shot (no additives) or it can be mixed with something in order to avoid the unpleasant taste.
  • Wine has the next highest alcohol concentration. A single glass of wine is generally 12-14% alcohol.
  • Beer has the lowest concentration of alcohol. Most beers are 4-6% alcohol, and it requires more drinking to reach the same levels of intoxication as wine or liquor might produce.
