San Antonio native Sam Hurt arrested on drug charges

Posted on December 19th, 2011 No Comments

San Antonio native, former Dallas Cowboys player, and now former Chicago Bears wide receiver, Sam Hurd, could be facing up to 40 years behind bars and and a $2 million fine for felony drug charges.

The 26 year-old was arrested by undercover Homeland Security agents who met with him. Hurd told the undercover agents that he was interested in purchasing 1,000 pounds of marijuana and five to ten kilograms of cocaine a week to expand his drug distribution ring.

Hurd’s lawyer says he plans on fighting the charges and says the rumor that he sold drugs to fellow NFL players is 100% false. His arrest stunned his teammates, coaches, and Bears’ general manager.

SAPD out for holiday patrol

Posted on December 15th, 2011 No Comments

The San Antonio Police Department is gearing up for the holiday season and warns officers will be on the streets, actively looking for possible drunk drivers.

Earlier this week the department met with bar and restaurant owners, Department of Public Safety, the District Attorney’s Office, and others to stress the dangers of drinking and driving.

SAPD also announced that it plans on installing radar devices on at least three highway exit ramps that will alert them when a wrong-way driver is attempting to get on the highway. The device would set off lights in order to track the driver. There is no proposed date as to when the radar device would be installed and put to use.

Three drunk driving crashes over the weekend

Posted on December 13th, 2011 No Comments

Three car crashes in an eight hour period are all suspected to be caused by drunk drivings, says the San Antonio Police Department.

One accident left one woman in her early 40s dead early Saturday morning. A wrong-way driving on Interstate 37 crashed head-on into her vehicle. The driver of the car suffered minor injuries and the woman’s passenger was not injured. Police say intoxication manslaughter charges are pending.

Another wrong-way driver, this time on Interstate 10, crashed head-on into a big rig truck Friday night. The 28 year-old woman was charged with drunk driving. No one was injured in the accident.

A drunk woman behind the wheel struck another vehicle on Interstate 35. A woman in the other car broke her neck. The driver could face intoxication assault charges.

Man accused of assault on the River Walk

Posted on December 5th, 2011 No Comments

A 24 year-old man is behind bars for his second aggravated sexual assault charge on the River Walk.

The San Antonio Police Department say that the man was arrested for assaulting a woman in May of this year. According to the arrest affidavit, the man attacked a 23 year-old woman after she had gotten kicked out of a night club for being too drunk. She was looking for her friends when the accused threatened her with a gun if she didn’t have sex with him.

In August he was arrested for sexual assault outside another downtown night club. DNA samples were what lead detectives to the arrest. He is currently held on $75,000 bond.

Occupy San Antonio protestor arrested for assault

Posted on December 1st, 2011 No Comments

According to San Antonio police, an Occupy San Antonio protestor was arrested earlier this week following accusations of assaulting his girlfriend at the downtown camp.

Other members at the camp reported the assault to police. Investigators believe that alcohol may have been involved and caused the confrontation to escalate. Members that called police said they have zero tolerance for violence, drugs, and alcohol. He was also cited for public consumption.

Local law enforcement says that other than this assault accusation, the Occupy movement in the city has been very peaceful and protestors have been cooperative with authorities.

Texas woman sentenced for fatal DWI

Posted on November 28th, 2011 No Comments

A 25 year-old woman from Conroe was sentenced to fifteen years in prison after pleading no contest to intoxication manslaughter.

Two years ago, the woman left a San Antonio Chili’s with a blood alcohol level of 0.30, nearly four times the legal limit of 0.08. She crashed into another car, killing the driver. The woman in the other car was a 53 year-old mother of two who cared for her husband, who had multiple sclerosis.

The maximum sentencing for intoxication manslaughter is twenty years. The Bexar County District Judge sentenced her to fifteen because of her high blood alcohol level and deemed her car a deadly weapon. She must serve half her sentence before applying for parole.

French thieves receive lower sentence

Posted on November 21st, 2011 No Comments

Two brothers, visiting San Antonio from France, who were arrested last month after they broke into the Bexar County Courthouse, have had their original charge of state jail felony of burglary of a building with intent to commit theft to a Class A misdemeanor.

The two brothers drunkenly left their friend’s RV to steal sombreros and a judge’s gavel on the night of October 18. Their new sentence would require only seventy five days in jail, versus 180 days to two years behind bars for their initial charge. Most likely, they will serve thirty to forty days before being turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The District Attorney’s Office is happy with the lowered sentence and says it is ready for the boys to return to France.

Fire chief claims innocence in DWI charge

Posted on November 17th, 2011 No Comments

A 20 year veteran of the Porter Fire Department denies he was drunk when a police officer pulled him over earlier this month. The fire chief believes he passed field sobriety tests, and yet the officer arrested him anyway.

He claims he was pulled over for a broken license plate light.  The man admitted to having two beers that night, but denies being drunk behind the wheel. He refused a breath test.

This is the fire chief’s first drunk driving offense, a Class B misdemeanor.  He hopes video from the officer’s dashboard camera will prove he passed the field sobriety tests when his case goes to trial in December.

One family member was asleep on the couch when the crash happened. He was thrown from the couch from the impact and thrown across the room. The man was sent to the hospital and suffers from three broken ribs and a dislocated shoulder. His son was also home and suffered minor injuries when the couch hit him.

The woman who was driving the vehicle was attempting to turn when she lost control. Police suspect drinking was a factor in the accident. She tried to run away but was caught shortly by police. She is charged with drunk driving and failing to stop and render aid.

Innocent Texas man freed after 14 years in prison

Posted on November 10th, 2011 No Comments

A Dallas man was released from prison last week after serving fourteen years for a crime he did not commit.

In 1992, his stepdaughter accused him of sexual assault. Six years later in 1998, a jury found him guilty and sentenced him to prison. The man could have received probation in exchange for a guilty plea, but he refused and continued to claim his innocence.

Even after his stepdaughter recanted her allegations, the courts did not believe her. On Friday morning, he walked out of the Frank Crowley Courthouse a free man. His parents and several members of his church were there to welcome him. He says he is not bitter towards his stepdaughter and forgives her.
