No Refusal policy nabs Spurs’ GM

San Antonio Spurs’ General Manager R.C. Buford was arrested over the weekend on charges of drunk driving and driving with an open container of alcohol.

The arrest occurred late on Friday night after a witness called 911 to report a car that hit a fence and then drove away. Another witness says Buford was driving in circles around a parking lot. When an officer arrived at the scene, the General Manager failed the administered field sobriety tests.

He was taken to Bexar County Jail where he refused a blood test. A warrant was obtained, thanks to the new 24/7 No Refusal policy, and blood samples were taken. The results of those tests have not been released. Buford was released from jail on Saturday after making bond.

Suspected drunk driver hits police cruiser

A 28 year-old man will face drunk driving, criminal mischief, and evading arrest charges after he is released from the hospital. Early this morning the man was being chased by police when he did a U-turn and hit the police cruiser. He then drove off and then crashed into a metal barrier.

The officer saw the man weaving in and out of traffic on Main and Evergreen, but sped off when the officer pulled him over. He then led the officer on a high speed chase through oncoming traffic before striking him head-on.

The suspect’s car burst into flames on impact of the barrier, but did not suffer life-threatening injuries. The officer was not hurt.

Bank employee charged with robbery

A 20 year-old man has been charged with robbery after he stole more than $270,000 from the bank he worked at. San Antonio police say that the man was arrested after he bragged about it to a police informant.

After searching the employee’s house, law enforcement found $84,000 of the stolen money and the bank bag used to carry it. The man later admitted to stealing the money.

Surveillance tapes show a man approaching a female employee as she was unlocking the bank doors. She says that he demanded that she let him in and take him to the safe. He then spray painted the surveillance cameras, walked out with the money, and took off in the employee’s vehicle.

Police captain arrested for drunk driving

The Sugar Land Police Department captain and veteran of the force for 27 years was arrested this weekend in Sugar Land on charges of drunk driving.

On Thursday night, the captain was driving near the scene of a fiery car crash when police officers instructed him to go around the wreckage. When the man attempted to drive through the blocked street, law enforcement pulled him over. After speaking with the captain, the officer suspected he was intoxicated.

The man was arrested and taken to the Fort Bend County Jail. He has since been released and put on administrative leave pending an investigation by the Stafford Police Department.

San Antonio expanding “No Refusal” policy

On Monday, October 31, San Antonio will be expanding the “No-Refusal” policy to every driver suspected of drinking any day of the year.

The Texas Department of Transportation awarded a grant of $1.4 million to Bexar County. This money will allow registered nurses to take blood tests from any driver who refuses a breath test. Bexar County is the largest metropolitan area in Texas to implement such a wide spread no-refusal protocol. The grant will only cover expenses for one year.

San Antonio originally began the “No-Refusal” policy in 2008. This past January, the Bexar County District Attorney expanded the policy to include weekends, starting from Friday at 5pm to Monday at 6am.

Wal-Mart founder’s daughter arrested for DWI

Alice Walton, the daughter of Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton, was arrested on her 62nd birthday for drunk driving in Weatherford last week. This is Walton’s second drunk driving offense; she was arrested and convicted in 1998 by an Arkansas court for driving while intoxicated.

Texas Highway Patrol pulled her over on Interstate 20 for a minor traffic violation when she was asked to perform field sobriety tests. She refused to take a breath test and subsequently failed the administered field sobriety tests. Walton was released early Saturday morning after posting $1,000 bail.

The heiress is listed by Forbes Magazine as the tenth wealthiest person in America with a net worth of $21 billion.

Man seeks appeal for sexual assault charge

A follower of the now infamous Yearning for Zion Ranch, a Mormon-owned church community located in Eldorado, Texas, wants to appeal his sexual assault conviction. He was convicted in 2008 of sexually assaulting two sixteen year-old girls at Zion Ranch. He plead no contest to these charges.

Police raided the ranch in 2008 after Child Protective Services received phone calls from children living in Zion Ranch who claimed they were being abused. The man believes the second search warrant obtained by law enforcement was invalid because the court did not acknowledge the information gained for the search warrant was based on misrepresentations of interrogations state service workers received from the children.

The man is currently serving a seven year prison sentence and five other followers are awaiting trial for similar charges.

Mistrial for San Antonio man’s assault charge

The jury is deadlocked in a case concerning a 31 year-old man charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The man is accused of pulling a knife on a teacher who was breaking up a fight involving the accused’s nephew and another child.

The fight broke out in 2009 and a teacher ran to break it up. He was in the middle of pulling the man’s nephew off of the other boy when the boy’s uncle came in and pulled out a knife. He claims he saw the teacher choking his nephew and denies carrying a knife, saying his arm was in a sling due to a recent shoulder surgery.

Witnesses say they never saw the teacher choking the child or the sling the defendant claims he was wearing. If the jury reaches an agreement over the decision, the man could face a 20 year prison sentence if found guilty.

Intoxicated driver hits pedestrian

A 22 year-old suspected drunk driver struck a female pedestrian crossing Blanco at West Avenue this past weekend. The 31 year-old San Antonio woman hit the windshield, but is expected to make a full recovery.

The male driver drove off after a police officer at the intersection saw the accident happen. Less than a mile down the road, the man slammed into a fire hydrant and was arrested by police. He has been charged with drunk driving, evading arrest, and intoxication assault.

The pedestrian was taken to University Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Drunk driving on the decline

According to a new study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drunk driving has decreased by 30% from its highest peak in 2006. 2010 was the CDC’s lowest percentage of drunk drivers since the study began in 1993.

However, nearly 4 million people have admitted to driving drunk at least once, which has resulted in at least 112 million drinking-related car accidents. On average, men make up 81% of all drunk drivers, and 32% of the men are between the ages of 21 and 34 years old. Those who live in the Midwest are more prone to drink and drive and also have the highest percentages of binge drinkers.

Alcohol still accounts for a third of all car fatalities.
